Island Readers & Writers’ (IRW) is hosting two Pop-Up Bookshop events around Mount Desert Island this month. The first is planned for Friday, July 12, on the Pemetic Green in Southwest Harbor; the second will be Thursday, July 18, in Northeast Harbor.
IRW produces an annual summer reading list, called “Open a Window Into a New World.” The summer booklist features 30 titles for all ages, carefully selected and reviewed by local volunteers and staff. It includes picture books, chapter books and young adult novels. In addition to titles on the list, the pop-up shops will also feature other books from Maine authors.
The first Pop-Up Bookshop will help kick off the Harbor House Flamingo Fest weekend. It will be held July 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Then, the Pop-Up Bookshop will travel to the Northeast Harbor Marina Green on Thursday, July 18, from 5-7 p.m., for a family event.
The shop will be open during the free concert by Bee Parks and the Hornets sponsored by the Neighborhood House and Northeast Harbor Library, which will be followed by the weekly evening movie.
IRW is a nonprofit organization based in Southwest Harbor that inspires a passion for reading and learning among children living on Maine’s coastal islands and in rural communities in Washington County. The organization hosts author visits, school programs and more.
