Poet speaks on Alzheimer’s

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Gary Rainford, a poet who lives on Swan’s Island, will hold a reading and discussion on April 23, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Southwest Harbor Library.

He is at work on a new collection of poems that tell the story of his mother’s first year living with Alzheimer’s disease. Rainford will discuss the poetry of Alzheimer’s disease and read “Category Five,” a short narrative poem. Contact 244-7065.

Baron Wormser, Maine’s poet laureate from 2000-2006, said of Rainford, “[his] poems have the tang of coastal Maine and the honesty of that rock-fog-salt wind world, at once straightforward yet holding subtleties of feeling that prickle flesh and psyche alike. Each poem provides a glimpse into depths — some momentary, some long-standing — all engaging.”
