MOUNT DESERT — Six private gardens in Northeast Harbor will be open for viewing Saturday, July 28, as part of an Open Garden day organized by the Garden Club of Mount Desert. The event is planned for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine.

“The Garden Club of Mount Desert is so happy to offer such a diverse variety of gardens,” said Liz Martinez, Open Garden Day chairman. “Guests will visit gardens large and small, woodsy and formal, seaside and in town.

“Several of the gardens are on historic properties with modern makeovers. The use of native plants and materials is an integral part of all the gardens resulting in highlighting Maine’s natural beauty.”

Open Garden Day is the club’s major fundraiser. Tickets are $45 or $40 in advance. All proceeds after expenses support horticultural and environmental organizations, according to Garden Club president Freddy Shaw.

Tickets are available at McGrath’s and the Northeast Harbor Library in Northeast Harbor, Sherman’s Books in Bar Harbor, the Southwest Harbor Chamber of Commerce, or at each garden on July 28. Visit www.gardenclubofmountdesert.org.
