Oktoberfest committee launches home brewing contest

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — A home brewing competition will be held at Smuggler’s Den Campground on Saturday, Oct. 6, during Oktoberfest 2018.

Individuals or teams may enter and should provide two 12-ounce bottles of beer. They should have a copy of the recipe in case they win.

Each beer will be tasted and scored by three different judges from a panel composed of professional brewers and local individuals knowledgeable about beer production and service. The judging will be conducted as a blind tasting.

The first-prize winner will brew the winning beer with Fogtown Brewing Company at its facility in Ellsworth for release at the brewery during the winter. Fogtown cannot replicate barrel-aged or cask-conditioned recipes or recipes that depend on spontaneous fermentation. Recipes may be modified for compatibility with Fogtown’s system.

Second and third prizes are gift baskets from Central Street Farmhouse in Bangor

All entries will receive prizes for participation. Each entry, which costs $50, includes two passes to Oktoberfest. Space is limited, so early signup is encouraged. Visit www.acadiaoktoberfest.com.

The competition is sponsored by Atlantic Brewing Company, Fogtown Brewing Company, Central Street Farmhouse and the Southwest Harbor & Tremont Chamber of Commerce.
