New folk opera to debut

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — “In a Sea of Faces,” a new folk opera by playwright and composer Jahn Sood, will show first in Southwest Harbor on Thursday, Aug. 4, before moving on to other communities on and off Mount Desert Island

The show, with a cast of New York actors, a six-piece band of Mount Desert Island rock and rollers and an imaginary sailboat, tells the story of an isolated island community and a family who lives on that island. Some of the themes of the show have earned it a self-assigned “PG-13.”

The Barn Arts Collective and Ketie Melby, performer and puppeteer, have partnered with Sood on the production.

“In a Sea of Faces” opens at the Southwest Harbor Public Library on Thursday, Aug. 4, at 6:30 p.m. and moves to Village Green Arts Center the same day at 8 p.m.

It plays at Chummy’s Boathouse, 2 Mitchell Road, in Bass Harbor Friday through Sunday, Aug. 5-7, at 7 p.m. nightly.

Isleford will host the performance Aug. 9 and 10 at places and times to be announced later, before the show moves back to Chummy’s Boathouse Aug. 12-13, again at 7 p.m.

From there, the performers move on to Rockland and then Brooklyn, N.Y.
