Neuman, Pratt exhibit opens at Star Gallery

MOUNT DESERT — An exhibit of the art of Robert S. Neuman and Mallie Loring Pratt will open at Star Gallery, 6 Neighborhood Road, Northeast Harbor, on Thursday, Aug. 25. A reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. for the show, which will be up through Sept. 12.

Pratt earned her bachelor’s degree from the Rhode Island School of Design and now works out of her studio in Essex, Mass. She teaches studio art at the Pingree School in Hamilton, Mass. Known for her minimalist landscapes of Maine, she has created two new series for the exhibit. Each series adds a fresh view on painting. The Produce Series adds a playfulness to fruit containers, while her Dream Series entices one to look more deeply into the complexity of the works.

For Neuman, the exhibition will include paintings, as well as unique works on paper from his Space Signs and Monument, Stacks and Piles series’. As 2016 marks the Acadia National Park Centennial, all of the works featured in this exhibition represent Neuman’s curiosity and inspiration from spending time in Maine.

The Space Signs Series, begun in 1966, contemplates space travel in the early 1960s by using bright colors, stamping and taping to represent interstellar orbs and geometric landscapes. The Stacks and Piles Series is inspired by cairns found when hiking the Acadia National Park trails.

In addition to the exhibition at Star Gallery, Neuman currently has an exhibition at the Maine Sea Coast Mission till Sept. 9. The exhibition features his Ship to Paradise series, also inspired by the artist’s time in Maine.

The Star Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
