Mes Amis to bring jazz to the Jesup

BAR HARBOR — Mes Amis will play an afternoon of jazz at the next Sundays at the Jesup Winter Concert on Sunday, Feb. 4, at 2 p.m.

Mes Amis plays an infectious mix of traditional gypsy, Latin and American jazz standards, along with original compositions. The band “appeals to listeners with its insistent rhythms, bouncing bass lines and sweetly intricate melodies,” said a press release.

At the core of the band is a trio led by guitarist, vocalist and composer Steve Lynnworth. Backing him up are Harry Richter on guitar and Wells Gordon on the upright bass. Richter provides “La Pompe,” the steady backbeat typical of the style, while Wells delivers “the authoritative thump as he holds down the bottom.” They are joined by Shane Ellis, a clarinet and sax player. After Mes Amis, the next concert in the Sundays at the Jesup Winter Concert Series will be the Show Stoppers and Swallowtail Fiddlers on Sunday, March 18, at 2 p.m. The Swallowtail Fiddlers, named after the Irish tune “Swallowtail Jig,” are string musicians from the Conners Emerson School in grades four through eight. The Show Stoppers are a show choir made up of students from the Conners Emerson School and Mount Desert Elementary School, accompanied by an all-student instrumental ensemble. Both groups are under the direction of Rebecca Edmondson. The final concert in the series will be performed by pianist Edison Liu on April 8 at 2 p.m.

All concerts are free and open to the public, but donations are gratefully accepted.
