MDES brings home gold in jazz festival

MILLINOCKET — Musicians from the Mount Desert Elementary School jazz band, under the direction of Heather Graves, earned a gold medal for excellent musicianship at the state Junior High Instrumental Jazz Festival this weekend at Stearns High School.

The group performed the “Mudbug Strut,” “Summertime” and “Fast Forward.” MDES was one of only four top-scoring schools in all four participating divisions, with the other golds going to the larger Division I schools. MDES students also swept four of the five Outstanding Musicianship awards, for Treyan Nelson on drums, Quentin Pileggi on trombone, Christopher Prokopius on tuba and Brendan Graves on trombone.

Conners Emerson is in Division III. Directed by Gene Gill and performing “The Chicken,” “L’il’ Darlin'” and “Flight of the Foo Birds,” they received a bronze award and an Outstanding Musicianship honor for trumpet player Sadie Sullivan.

In Division IV, Alison Putnam’s Tremont School also distinguished itself by earning a bronze medal.

Brian Booher’s Trenton Elementary School brought home an honorable mention, and Pemetic School Jazz Band, directed by Ed Michaud, performed strongly to an appreciative audience.
