‘Sylvia’ opens at the Acadia Rep, special ‘Love Letters’ reading set

MOUNT DESERT — The Acadia Repertory Theatre opens its third production of the season this week: A.R. Gurney’s “Sylvia.” One of the Rep’s most requested productions, this is a humorous look into the life of two empty-nesters (played by locals Frank Bachman and Liz Pereira) and their conflicting viewpoints on the arrival of a dog named “Sylvia” (played by Acadia Rep favorite Valarie Faulken). The shows will have you rolling in the aisle as a man copes with a mid-life crisis, and the two women in his life (one human and one canine) fight for his attention. The production runs Tuesdays through Sundays from July 28 through Aug. 16. All performances are at 8:15 p.m. except for a special 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Aug. 16. Call the box office to reserve your tickets today. “Sylvia” is rated PG-13 for mild profanity.

The Acadia Rep is also proud to announce a special reading of “Love Letters” by A.R. Gurney, in memory and honor of the late Acadia Rep actor and supporter Phil Fox. The reading, starring Chloe Hatcher and Ephron Catlin, will take place on Monday, Aug. 3, at 5 p.m. at the theatre. This is a free-will donations event; all proceeds will help realize Fox’s dream of an air conditioning system for the theatre.

And continuing this week is the Rep’s beloved Children’s Theatre Program with Cheryl Willis’ new adaptation of “Hansel and Gretel.” Children in the audience will enjoy the familiar story told in a new way, and the children’s grownup companions will also appreciate the larger story in which it’s wrapped. This fractured fairy tale plays every Wednesday and Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. all summer.

The Acadia Rep offers Season Subscriptions at a 25 percent savings. Call the box office at 244-7260 or visit
