Bernstein tribute to open Quietside music festival

MOUNT DESERT — Vocalists Katelyn and Isaac Bray and pianist Christina Spurling present a concert to celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday Sunday, July 15, at 2 p.m. at the Somesville Union Meeting House (SUMH). The program includes a range of musical theater selections and works for piano and voice. There is a $10 suggested donation.

The concert is the first performance of a new Quietside Chamber Music Festival. The festival is a series of concerts featuring local artists and some visiting from the Boston area. It grew out of the success of several concerts held at the Somesville Church last summer, under the direction of Spurling.

“It’s a way for me to give back to a community that values the arts and that set me on this path,” Spurling said. “It’s a dream come true for me to perform with these artists in the place where I grew up. It feeds my soul.”

Katelyn Bray and Isaac Bray both earned their master’s degrees in opera performance from the Boston Conservatory. Christina earned a master’s in collaborative piano from the Longy School of Music of Bard College. All three now live in the Mount Desert Island area and they have cultivated a unique artistic partnership.

Concerts will be held throughout the summer at SUMH and St. John in Southwest Harbor. The next concert, “Summer Sounds for Flute, Cello & Piano: Haydn, Villa Lobos, Mendelssohn,” is set for Saturday, July 21. Spurling, at the piano, will be joined by Jaime Feldman on cello and Nick Southwick on flute.

Donations from the concerts will benefit the artists, the church venues and the West Side Food Pantry.
