TREMONT — The Barn Arts Collective (formerly the Mohawk Arts Collective) will begin its eighth summer season presenting new performances and events across Mount Desert Island on Friday, June 5, at 7 p.m. with a one-night only presentation of “The Barn on Bass Harbor,” a new interactive theater event from the New York-based performance group, State of Play. The show will take place at The Barn, the collective’s waterfront performance space in Bass Harbor.
State of Play is the Barn Arts Collective’s first group of resident artists in a summer season that will bring over 50 professional artists to Bass Harbor to develop and perform new work. Performances take place every weekend and will include music, dance, film, puppetry and all types of theater.
This week’s residency will feature the audience as an integral part of the performance. “State of Play makes interactive events – it’s like a live-action video game,” said Barn Arts co-founder Andrew Simon. “They’re creating a piece specifically for The Barn that brings the performance to the audience in a totally unique and innovative way. We’re very excited to have them here on the island.”
The following weekend, the collective will host two performances at two different locations on the Quietside. Anomalous Company, based out of California, will perform an excerpt from a piece called “Hysteria” at Pacific Hall in West Tremont on Thursday, June 11, at 6 p.m., and the Barn Arts Collective’s Chekhov Club will present the first of act of “The Seagull” in and around The Barn on Saturday, June 13, at 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, audiences of all ages can enjoy the collective’s interactive theater event every weekend in Bar Harbor in the form of “We Run the Ship,” the choose-your-own adventure musical performing every Saturday at 11 a.m., and Thursdays at 11 a.m. starting June 25, all summer at the Criterion Theatre.
The Barn is located at 130 Tremont Rd. in Bass Harbor. Visit www.barnartscollective.com.
