MOUNT DESERT — The Agatha Christie play “The Unexpected Guest” opened at the Acadia Repertory Theatre in Somesville on Aug. 12 and will run through August 31. The theater is one of the few professional theatres in North America that regularly programs Agatha Christie plays. Since 1990, Christie’s fiendishly plotted and tautly written plays have puzzled, thrilled and chilled about 45,000 audience members in the 148-seat theater.
“The Unexpected Guest” begins when a mysterious stranger materializes out of the fog at a large English country house, then discovers a murder scene. A man lies dead in a wheelchair, a smoking gun by his side, and a woman in the room claims to have committed the murder. But this is an Agatha Christie play, and all is not as it seems! The house is full of skillfully-wrought characters, every one of whom has a plausible motive to have done the deed. As the play goes on, the ground shifts so much underneath the audience’s expectations that only the most ardent Christie aficionado could see the ending coming. Reviewing the original production, the critic for the “London Evening News” wrote, “Just when the murder seems solved … Miss Christie pulls her almighty knock out punch. I admit her complete victory.”
“The Unexpected Guest” runs nightly Tuesday through Sunday at 8:15 p.m. with the final show a Sunday matinee.
Also at the Rep is Cheryl Willis’ adaptation of the classic “Puss in Boots.” This new take on the classic story will appeal, though the show is part of the Children’s Theatre Program. “Puss in Boots” is staged Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. through Aug. 30.
