Literary-themed meals to resume



BAR HARBOR — A “Babette’s Feast”-themed dinner will be prepared at Nostrano by Chef Frank Pendola on Wednesday, Jan. 11, at 5:30 p.m. to support the Jesup Memorial Library.

What began years ago for Pendola as an effort to surround himself with the tastes and smells of his old New York Italian neighborhood evolved in 2004 into the creation of Nostrano, a Tuscan-style kitchen built in the lower level of his home. Nostrano was designed as the place where Pendola can use his garden ingredients to prepare extensive meals in an open, interactive setting. Here, guests can relax, enjoy good food and learn about the origin of each dish.

Seating at the dinner is limited to eight people. Tickets cost $80 per person and include a copy of “Babette’s Feast.” Tickets can be purchased at the Jesup in person or over the phone.

This is the first Pages & Repasts literary-themed meal of 2017. The events are fundraisers for the library. All of the meals are hosted by community members or businesses and include a discussion based on a book.

As a private nonprofit, the Jesup has served as the public library in the town of Bar Harbor since it opened in 1911. However, the town provides less than 5 percent of the funds needed by the library to keep the doors open. Endowment provides another 43 percent. The rest comes from generous businesses and individuals.
