BAR HARBOR — Dr. Steven Kassels, author of “Addiction on Trial: Tragedy in Downeast Maine,” will host an intimate dinner and author talk at the home of Donna Reis on Saturday, May 13, at 6:30 p.m. This is the latest Pages & Repasts literary-themed fundraiser for the Jesup Memorial Library.
“Addiction on Trial” is a medical murder mystery and legal thriller that centers on the murder of Down East resident Annette Fiorno. The book sends a powerful message through the outcome of a trio of characters with opiate and cocaine addictions. The messages of societal discrimination toward drug addicts and misunderstanding of what drug addiction really is – a chronic illness requiring a treatment approach similar to that for other chronic diseases – are woven into the intrigue of this thriller. The reader is exposed to psychosocial and biological nuances through the characters’ actions and from gripping snippets of testimony at Jimmy’s trial.
Kassels received his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Mich. He has been board certified in both emergency medicine and addiction medicine, and he is currently the medical director and a founding member of Community Substance Abuse Centers, which specializes in the treatment of opiate addicted patients throughout New England.
To purchase tickets, which cost $50 each and include a copy of the book, contact the Jesup at 288-4245 or [email protected].
