SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Melissa Sweet, author of the new book “Some Writer! The Story of E.B. White,” will make an author presentation at the Pemetic Elementary School gym on Monday, Nov. 28, at 7 p.m.
Sweet will talk about the process of writing and illustrating a biography of White, best known for his children’s book “Charlotte’s Web,” what research was required to illuminate his prolific life and the multitude of decisions made in creating her art and story.
The visit is part of an Island Readers & Writers six island tour off the Maine coast.
Local IRW volunteers also will host a pop-up exhibit of local children’s artwork and projects based on Sweet’s books that they completed throughout November at public libraries across Mount Desert Island.
Books will be for sale, and Sweet will sign books after the presentation.
This is the last stop of IRW’s “Some Writer!” island tour, which also included stops on North Haven, Vinalhaven, Deer Isle-Stonington, Swans Island and Great Cranberry Island. These six events are among the first of Sweet’s national tour with the book.
In a recent interview, Sweet said beginning the tour on Maine’s islands, with IRW at her side, made perfect sense. E.B. White, she noted, lived and wrote in Maine for much of his life. Sweet also said that IRW’s focus on building community through the shared experience of reading also resonated with her.
Headquartered on Mount Desert Island, IRW’s mission is to inspire a passion for reading and learning among children living on Maine’s coastal islands and remote communities in Washington County. Visit www.islandreadersandwriters.org.
