MOUNT DESERT — Mark Kantor and Phil Kell will perform as a duo March 1 at the Northeast Harbor Library at the First Friday Coffeehouse, which begins at 7 p.m.

An open mic session hosted by Blue Gene kicks off the evening, from 7-8 p.m. All performing artists are welcome to sign up for a ten-minute slot.

Kantor and Kell will play beginning at 8 p.m., a program of mostly blues, on guitar, harmonica, bass, and vocals. The pair “played together as a duo a long time ago, so this will be something of a reunion for them,” organizers said.

Kantor, who grew up in the Bronx, said he first came to Mount Desert Island in 1974, led here by two hitchkikers. He moved here permanently in 1975. He was inspired by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band originally, and started with the harmonica, later picking up the guitar. He still credits Paul Butterfield as one of his favorite artists, along with Muddy Waters.

Kell has lived in Maine for more than twenty years, supporting himself as a musician in rural Maine by teaching music and working various jobs. He attended college at UMO, studying music performance with a focus on the double bass. After some years as a classical musician he branched out into many genres of music, playing with many local bands and musicians, on many different instruments. Lately he has focused on jazz.

The First Friday Coffeehouse is free of charge and donations are gratefully accepted. Refreshments are on sale throughout the evening, in support of the MDES Greenhouse.
