BAR HARBOR — Jenny Jones and Mary Parham will discuss healthy eating and food insecurity on Mount Desert Island Wednesday, March 6, at 7 p.m. at the Jesup Memorial Library.
Jones is executive director of the Bar Harbor Food Pantry. Parham is the community health educator at MDI Hospital. Together, they will talk about healthy eating and food insecurity as well as share some tips and tricks people can use to eat healthier food on a budget.
Parham will also discuss some of the food and healthy eating programs the hospital offers to members of the community. Jones will speak about food insecurity in the community and steps the pantry is taking to create access to healthier food and eliminate barriers that people on MDI face when trying to access this food.
This talk is happening during the Hancock County Food Drive, an annual, month-long food collection and fundraising project that directly supports 17 food pantries, free community meals and school backpack programs across the county.
The food drive was started in 2012 to address the high rate of food insecurity the community faces during later winter and early spring. Members of the Hancock County Food Security Network work together throughout the month of March to raise funds and collect food.
