BAR HARBOR — A Haitian art and crafts sale will be held in the parking lot of The Bar Harbor Congregational Church, 29 Mount Desert St., on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Susie and Frazier Meade, founders of Art Works for Haiti, travel to Port au Prince to buy art directly from Haitian artists, and then host fundraising art shows throughout Maine. Proceeds support schools in the village of Figaro, Haiti, along with the Bar Harbor Congregational Church’s Friends of Haiti outreach projects, which include hosting two outstanding Haitian students later this August and purchasing a bakery delivery vehicle for a Haitian-run community development project.
The two young women, 11th graders at Institution Univers in Ouanaminthe, Haiti, will come to Mount Desert Island for two weeks to strengthen their English skills and learn about American culture to better prepare for continuing their education at a U.S. college or university.
This past February, 13 people from MDI spent a week volunteering in Ounaminthe, both at Institution Univers’ K-13 school and the affiliated medical clinic. The students’ skill and determination and the resilient hope of the Haitian people inspire our ongoing Friends of Haiti Project, which seeks to address the needs that our Haitian partners identify as most critical to their goal of educating and empowering the next generation of transformational Haitian leaders.
