Gardening program for kids

MOUNT DESERT — Kids Can Grow!, a youth gardening program of the University of Maine Cooperative Extension will be offered this May through September at Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s Babson Creek Preserve site in Somesville.

The program is designed for up to 16 children ages 7-12 and offers monthly hands-on gardening classes for the whole group, as well as materials and help for each participant to build their own 3-by-5-foot raised bed, including wood, loam, compost, seeds and plants. Master Gardener volunteers will guide each child’s efforts at home.

Participants will learn about planting, growing and harvesting their own vegetable, herb and flowering plants; nutrition and food safety; and teamwork.

Registration will be on a first come, first served basis with a fee of $25 to the University of Maine and a registration deadline of April 24 (scholarships possible). There will be a required parent orientation meeting (children welcome) on Tuesday, April 28, from 5:15-6:15 p.m. at the trust’s office in Somesville.

Group gardening sessions will be on the second Tuesday of each month, May-September, from 4-6 p.m.
