First Friday returns

Bowman, bob 2MOUNT DESERT — The First Friday Coffeehouse at the Northeast Harbor Library resumes on Dec. 4. An open mic session hosted by Blue Gene runs from 7-7:45 p.m. All performing artists are welcome. Sign in on the clipboard at the door to participate.

At 8 p.m., Bob Bowman, captain, naturalist and musician, begins an hour of solo guitar. He will play a mixture of original music, Irish harp music arranged for guitar and some Christmas carols. The music will range from very slow and melodic to ragtime. Bowman plays guitar in an intricate style he developed on his own, influenced by Baroque music and a love of aires, waltzes and jigs from the British Isles. He is self taught on the guitar and plays by ear. In the summer, he plays nightly at McKay’s, and he plays at three different restaurants in St Andrews, New Brunswick. He did the music for two recent films, on Ralph Stanley and Chummy Rich, and has a CD of original music, “Edge of the Earth,” available at

The First Friday Coffeehouse is free of charge, though donations are thankfully accepted. Refreshments, in support of the MDES Greenhouse Project, are on sale throughout the evening.
