SOUTHWEST HARBOR — After 11 years of playing bluegrass on Mount Desert Island and surrounding areas, Dog Mountain will play its farewell gig Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at Coda.
The group performed its first show in the side yard of St. John Church in 2006. Following that initial gig, Mike Ryan, Jim Vekasi and Fred Benson played as a trio for a while before being joined by Stan Wass on the banjo and Linda Soukup on the violin.
Ryan is a lifelong lead guitarist and is well-versed in the history and traditions of bluegrass. Vekasi plays mandolin and octave mandolin in several Mount Desert Island bands. Soukup is a classically trained violinist who also sings with the Bagaduce Chorale in Blue Hill. Wass is a Maine guide and plays banjo. Benson, on bass, started with the violin and plays just about every stringed instrument.
The music starts at 6:30 p.m. Dinner service begins at 5 p.m. Reservations suggested; call 244-8133.
