Dessert sales to boost YWCA

BAR HARBOR — The 2nd annual Sweets for Safe Housing benefit will take place at Galyn’s Restaurant, 17 Main St., on Wednesday, April 26, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The event helps the YWCA MDI.

The value of all desserts purchased that day will be donated to the YWCA by the restaurant. There also will be a silent auction of items from local business, with bidding taking place throughout the day.

“Last year, the community helped raise more than $750 for the YW through dessert purchases, and even more was raised with the silent auction,” said Gail Leiser.

“We at Galyn’s recognize the importance of all the YW does to encourage personal growth, leadership skills, and economic security for women and girls of ages. And we believe affordable, safe and secure housing is the cornerstone of this work.”

“Approximately 35 percent of our operating budget is dedicated to our residence program,” said Jackie Davidson, executive director of the YWCA MDI.

“Our facility allows women who would otherwise be priced out of the rental market – and potentially facing homelessness – to live safely and securely in our community.”

Over the past 100 years, the YWCA has been home to thousands of women and girls who have sought affordable housing on MDI. Its doors are open to all women with single rooms (one bed), double rooms (two twin beds) and a solarium (seven bed dorm open in the summer only) offered at low rates by the night or by the week. There are generally 13-15 year-round residents at the YW and up to 43 residents during the tourist season. Space also is available for short-term housing of women and families in distress.
