SOUTHWEST HARBOR — Deanna Bonner-Ganter, author of the biography “Kosti Ruohomaa: The Photographer Poet” (Rowman and Littlefield), will speak at The Claremont on Thursday, July 7, at 8:15 p.m.
Bonner-Ganter began research on the life and photojournalism career of 20th-century photographer Kosti Ruohomaa in 1993. She noted that his Finnish heritage contributed to his poetic vision seen in themes of dawn, night, winter, fog, inclement weather and work close to the land and close to the sea.
She wrote, “Mood and atmosphere were prerequisite to Ruohomaa’s lens. Kosti Ruohomaa’s camera brought a depth and dramatic artistry to his work that distinguished it from news and documentary photography of his active years, the 1940s and 1950s. He titled his images ‘poetry’ as did critics and curators.”
Bonner-Ganter recently retired from her position as curator of photography, art and archives at the Maine State Museum. She curated “The Passionate Photographer: Kosti Ruohomaa’s Maine and Magazine Photojournalism.” The exhibition of Ruohomaa’s vintage photographs will remain open through July 16.
