BAR HARBOR — Tamara Crowley has been named interim director of The Criterion Theatre.

The Criterion’s board of directors interviewed several candidates to fill the interim executive director position after outgoing director Heather Martin stepped down to complete her master’s degree.

Crowley, who grew up in Ellsworth with ties to Northeast Harbor, most recently worked as vice president of operations for a global firm that specializes in executive leadership development. She said she looks forward to taking that experience and skill set and focusing her efforts locally.

“[Crowley] brings a great sense of fun and collaboration to all her endeavors,” said Carrie Jones, board vice president. “Couple that with Tamara’s roots in the community, her keen intelligence and kind nature, along with her understanding of the Criterion’s special place in the Mount Desert Island community, and she’s really just exceptional. … We had multiple, wonderful candidates apply for the position, but Tamara is without a doubt the right leader for the Criterion at this point in its growth.”

Crowley said she hopes to continue the strong membership program, expand volunteer initiatives, seek out unique performances and connect with more local businesses for sponsorships.

“This theater is at the heart of the community,” Crowley said. “This is a great opportunity to take 20 plus years of professional experience and plop it right down in the middle of a personal passion within my own community. I’m looking forward to continuing the great success of the theater, working with really talented, creative people and bringing diversity of the arts to this stage.”

“My business mind is about sustainability, financial health and creating greater connections,” she said. “I’m looking forward to generating a sense of community ownership and stewardship.

“It’s an honor to be here. I’m just really looking forward to creating this part of The Criterion’s story while I’m listening to everybody else’s individual stories about the theater.”

The 1932 Criterion Theatre is a nonprofit cinema, theater, multimedia art producer and venue committed to safeguarding this historic space for stories, storytellers and audiences.
