MOUNT DESERT — Acadia Community Theater will bring to life Dr. Seuss’ Circus McGurkus at a family-friendly evening of entertainment at Neighborhood House on Saturday, April 7, from 6-10 p.m.
“We thought it would be fun to focus our celebration and fundraising event around the Circus McGurkus, the fabled, extraordinary circus featured in Dr. Seuss’ 1956 book, ‘If I Ran the Circus,’ said Keri Hayes, ACT president. “We challenge our friends and neighbors to unleash their creativity in preparing costumes for the event. If you are not able to put together a costume, no worries, we also welcome anyone who just wants to dance!”
Party-goers are invited to dress as a circus performer or as their favorite character from Dr. Seuss’ books. Prizes will be awarded for best costume.
From 6-7 p.m., there will be activities for young people, an art show from local students, a costume contest and a sundae bar with ice cream donated by Morton’s Moo.
The funk and classic rock band Clusterfunk will perform from 7-10 p.m. Appetizers and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided, and participants are welcome to bring their own alcoholic beverages. Acadia Community Theater’s cast from the upcoming production of “Seussical” may perform snippets from the musical numbers in the show.
Tickets for the circus-themed event cost $10 per adult, $20 for a family of four or more, and $5 for seniors, veterans and children aged 12 and under. They will be available at the door.
Proceeds from the event will support the production of ACT’s performance of “Seussical, The Musical,” as well as the organization’s youth scholarships, summer camp partnerships and summer performances.
“Seussical” will be performed at Mount Desert Island High School on Friday, March 30, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 31, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. The show will be performed for a second weekend at The Criterion Theatre on Friday, April 13, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, April 14, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Visit Acadia Community Theater’s Facebook page or www.acadiacommunitytheater.net.
