Chris Doyle to play at Criterion

BAR HARBOR — Chris Doyle returns to Mount Desert Island to perform as part of a jazz quartet at the Criterion Theatre on Saturday, Aug. 27, at 8 p.m. The performance is in celebration of the Bar Harbor Jazz Festival.

A 2011 Berklee College of Music graduate and a Mount Desert Island High School alumnus, Doyle will be joined on stage by three fellow Mainers: Aaron Rourk (saxophones), Ross Gallagher (bass) and R.J. Miller (drums). The quartet will debut four original works in addition to performing music from some of their favorite artists and composers.

“Jazz is really just music without boundaries at its base, or that’s how I see it. I hope people can take that impression away from the show; that jazz can be an inclusive art form and an interactive exploration of the now,” said Doyle.

The exploration through the lens of an instrumental jazz quartet will provide the audience with a taste of contemporary classical, African and improvisational music.

“My goal is to put on a show that will have a little something for everyone. Ideally, we can inspire the audience to continue to check out new music shows on the island and support the arts at a local level,” said Doyle. “It’s great to be able to come home and play a show with Mainers for Mainers in Maine. It’s a testament to the openness of this community and its continued support for the arts. I’ve had the opportunity to travel the world through music, and I still find myself working with many Maine-grown musicians.”

Tickets can be purchased at or at the box office an hour before show time.
