MOUNT DESERT — The First Friday Coffeehouse at the Northeast Harbor Library will return for its 15th season on Jan. 6. and run for four months.
The evening will begin at 7 p.m. with an open mic session hosted by Blue Gene. All performing artists are welcome to participate, usually for about 10 minutes. The featured program will begin at 8 p.m. following a short break at the top of the hour.
Stephen Bowman and Friends will be the evening’s featured entertainment. Bowman will play guitar and sing, Phil Kell will play guitar, and Beau Lisy will play percussion. They will play a mix of jazz, Latin rock and pop folk.
Bowman lives in Somesville with his wife, Christine.
Bowman moved to Mount Desert Island in 2012. He started playing guitar when he was about 10, and he learned by playing along with recorded instrumentals, especially the Ventures. He never learned to read music; he learned by ear. He started his first band, a garage band called “Tony and the Frosted Flakes,” when he was 11 or 12.
Later, living in Arizona, Bowman met Michael Somma, a professional musician, who became a teacher to him. Somma helped Bowman become more serious about playing. Bowman plays now with other musicians in the area: Bobbi Lane, Bill Haynes, Ruth Grierson and Mark Kantor.
There is no charge for the coffeehouse, though donations are always welcome. Refreshments will be for sale throughout the evening.
