Zany races support cancer patients

BAR HARBOR — Atlantic Brewing Company presents its 13th Annual War Canoe and Belt Sander races Columbus Day Weekend on Sunday, October 9.

The annual day of friendly competition benefits the The Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center and the Muir Fund for Cancer Support.

“This year’s theme is Heavy Metal,” Molly Krueger of Atlantic Brewing said. “We always poll the staff here for theme ideas, to see who can come up with the zaniest idea. We’re excited about this one. There’s ample opportunity to dress up the belt sanders, but if humans wanted to come dressed up as well, that’s super fun. We get excited to see what people come up with.”

The cash-only entry fee of $20 per person includes barbeque buffet, a souvenir glass, and entry into the Canoe Race and/or Belt Sander race.

Sign-up for the war canoe races begins at 11:00 a.m. at Long Pond and races start at 12. The Long Pond Paddlers sponsor this portion of the event. Participants meet and park at Pond’s End on the Pretty Marsh Road. Canoes, paddles, and life jackets will be provided.

“It’s a lot of the same people who participate every year,” Krueger said, “but there’s definitely space for new folks to give it a try!” No experience is necessary; the format is a series of short races.

The barbeque buffet begins at 11:30 a.m. over at Atlantic Brewing headquarters at 15 Knox Road. Live music by Mondo Charlie begins at noon.

The belt sander races get underway at 3 p.m. The sanders must have their stock motors; sanders with modified motors are not allowed. Prizes are awarded for first, second, and third place in the sander races.
