Beatrix Farrand Society announces Lifetime Achievement Award, lecture

BAR HARBOR — The Beatrix Farrand Society’s inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award and lecture series will be held at the Maine Sea Coast Mission, 127 West St., on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 5-7 p.m. The award recognizes an individual for his or her significant contribution to humanity and the environment through the art of landscape architecture, design or the natural sciences.

The first honoree and lecturer will be Laurie Olin, founding partner of the landscape architecture and urban design firm Olin. Both a teacher and a landscape architect, Olin has received numerous awards, among which are a 1999 Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the National Medal of the Arts and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture.

Olin’s lecture, “A Designer’s Designer: the Craft and Art of Beatrix Farrand,” will reflect an appreciation of Farrand’s work, focusing upon the craft and nature of her garden designs with an emphasis on her technical skill, drawing, architectural composition and eye.

A reception and refreshments will follow.

The Beatrix Farrand Society is a nonprofit organization with a primary mission to educate the general public in the science of horticulture with particular emphasis on a study of the life and work of Beatrix Farrand.
