MOUNT DESERT — The Mount Desert Island High School is holding auditions for its upcoming musical, “Tarzan.” The auditions were scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Sept. 7.

They will continue on Thursday, Sept. 8, from 3-6 p.m.

For those who have not seen the movie “Tarzan”, it is the story of a human boy who is abandoned in the jungle and is raised by apes. He finds out that he is human when an expedition from England stumbles upon him. However, conflicts arise in the expedition party, and Tarzan is forced to choose between staying with his ape family and going to England with the humans.

According to director Casey Rush, there are about seven central parts, plus many ensemble parts. Anybody who does not receive a central part will be in the ensemble.

Technical director Grey Burkart has been doing tech rehearsals with his crew for several weeks. He said that the most exciting part is seeing what they come up with as they build the set.

Rush is very excited for the show, mostly due to the fact that this is one of the only family shows they have done in recent years.

If you would like to support the musical, you can go to mdidrama.org, where you can find out more about show times, as well as a link to the Black Rose Fund, an account that is dedicated to the continued renovation of the theater. The next initiative will be trying to acquire a new light board. Rush also needs people who have sewing or makeup skills, which will be helpful for all of the monkey costumes they will need to make.
