Yah! Yah! Oktoberfest

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — The annual Southwest Harbor-Tremont Chamber of Commerce Oktoberfest is set for Columbus Day Weekend, Oct.10 and 11.

Once again, it will be held at Smuggler’s Den Campground in Southwest Harbor. Saturday’s beer tasting, food and music party will include a third tent filled with fine Maine crafters and their work. It is open from noon to 6 p.m. Wine and cheese tasting on Friday will be from 4-7 p.m. Restaurants on the “Quietside” will offer weekend specials. Reservations are suggested.

The Liquor Locker’s Tyler Johnson will host a “special infusions tasting table” where he will pair world-class and hard-to-find brews with exotic and seasonal ingredients, such as herbs, candies, fruits, spices and syrups. to make uniquely flavored beers.

New brewers from Boston, Downeast Cider House and Angry Orchard will be on hand. In the food tent, participants will find Nostrano’s, Mainely Meat, Jay Dub’s and some new tastes too.

The Peterson Project will be back again this year, playing blues and roots music. Opening for them are Russell and Jeff of Bar Harbor, playing rock, reggae and original music.

New contests this year include prizes for best costume, best brewers table, and a peoples’ choice award for most popular brewer.

Atlantic Brewing of Bar Harbor is sponsoring its second annual 15 lb. “torpedo keg toss” with both men’s and women’s divisions. Boston Beer is sponsoring a beer stein hoisting contest, and there will also be a “beerless pong” tournament on tap.

The chamber will operate two 14-passenger vans from various parking lots in Southwest Harbor to Smuggler’s Den and back. Parking at the event is limited to motorcycles and handicapped parking. “Plan to leave your car in town, ride our free shuttle and do some shopping in town on your way back. Look for the red banners marking shuttle pick-up locations,” organizers said.

Guests can buy their tickets early at the chamber offices until Thursday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m. Full-admission passes include a souvenir glass and 10 beer tickets for $30. The entertainment and craft tent entrance fee is still $10. All major credit cards are accepted at the office.

Entrance to the wine and cheese tasting will be available Friday evening at the door at a cost of $15 per person or $27 per couple.

The Liquor Locker also will host its own beer tasting on Friday evening from 3-6 p.m. on Seal Cove Rd. There is no charge for admission.

Sponsors include Smuggler’s Den Campground, The Liquor Locker, Sawyer’s Specialties, The Causeway Club, Wallace Tent and Harbor House.
