DAMARISCOTTA — Sherman’s Books & Stationery will acquire the Maine Coast Book Shop & Café here in January. The shop will become the sixth store in the Sherman’s chain, which will change its name to Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shops.
Sherman’s current five locations are in Bar Harbor, Camden, Boothbay Harbor, Freeport and Portland’s Old Port. Sherman’s oldest location, in Bar Harbor, is about to enter its 130th year and was founded by William Sherman in 1886. Jeff Curtis acquired the store from his mother in 2006.
Under Susan Porter’s leadership, the Maine Coast Book Shop & Café grew into a cultural hub of the Damariscotta community. In 2008, it was named The New England Bookstore of the Year by the Book Publishers Representatives of New England and the New England Independent Booksellers Association. Both Sherman’s and Maine Coast Book Shop share the honor of being named Best Bookstores in Maine by “Down East” magazine readers through the years.
Says Curtis, “Joining together, we look forward to bringing the best of the Maine Coast Book Shop to the other Sherman’s stores and the best of Sherman’s to the Maine Coast Book Shop to ultimately create the best of the best local, independent bookstores for each of our communities.”
Susan and Barnaby Porter will continue to run the business through this Christmas season. Sherman’s will assume daily operations on January 1, 2016.
