Rainbow Festival to glow in June

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School Gay/Straight Diversity Alliance welcomes all community members to the Rainbow Festival at MDI High School on June 6.

Workshops begin at 1 p.m., and there also will be family friendly face painting, bracelet making, origami, coloring and alternative games through the afternoon. Everyone who comes must fill out a door prize slip for free door prizes to be drawn during “The Wizard of Oz” intermission in the evening. You do not need to be present to win, but if you are not there, we will choose the prize for you. Silly hats and costumes are encouraged.

Mount Desert Island’s own Improv Acadia will perform at 4 p.m., and everything will stop for this. This is improvisational theater at its finest.

Bring a potluck offering if you would like to stay for a big community potluck dinner.

At 6:30 p.m., we will show “The Wizard of Oz” and have the door prize drawing of over 50 items including donations from the SPCA of Hancock County at intermission.

A free dance follows and will last until 11 p.m.

The events are free to all, but donations will be accepted and split between the MDIHS Gay/Straight Diversity Alliance to defray Rainbow Festival costs, the MDIHS Black Rose Society for refurbishing the theater sound system and the annual University of Maine at Machias Rainbow Ball, which is free every early spring to all high school students in Maine.
