BAR HARBOR — Nimbus Dance Works, the Jersey City-based professional dance company, will be on Mount Desert Island next week to teach and perform.

Nimbus presents an evening at the Criterion Theatre on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 8 p.m. During the week, the company will be in residence at Camp Beech Cliff teaching dance, culminating with a family-oriented performance Friday, Aug. 3, at 6 p.m.

Led by Founding Artistic Director Samuel Pott, former soloist with the Martha Graham Dance Company and lead dancer with the American Repertory Ballet, Nimbus has performed its brand of contemporary dance for 14 years. Under Pott’s direction, the company has grown each year adding new repertory, programs, community initiatives and performances at venues including NJPAC, Jacob’s Pillow and the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Nimbus’ premiere at the Criterion Theatre features “Danzon” by Cuban choreographer Pedro Ruiz set to a score by Arturo Marquez. The show includes a preview of Pott’s newest project, “The Glare from These Horizons,” which draws on the poetry of his brother, Roland Pott.

Another piece, “Memo,” will include performers from MDI’s own Motion Collective.

Tickets are $12-$30 available. Call 288-0829 or visit www.criteriontheatre.org.

The Friday performance at Camp Beech Cliff begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 for individuals or $15 for families. All ages are welcome.

The performance includes “Basil with Luv,” which tells a story about factory workers in 1930s Brazil through Hip Hop dance, Capoeira, Samba, and modern dance. “With narration, colorful costumes, full lighting, these performances provide a wonderful introduction to dance for young audience members,” event organizers said. Audience members will be able to meet and take pictures with the dancers following the show.

Company repertory features work by Pott, and by commissioned choreographers such as Pedro Ruiz (Cuba/USA), Huang Yi (Taiwan), Korhan Basaran (Turkey), and Darshan Singh Bhuller (United Kingdom).

Nimbus tours regularly throughout the United States.
