SOUTHWEST HARBOR — George Soules will present “A Brief History of Photography on Mount Desert Island” at the Southwest Harbor Public Library on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at 6:30 p.m.

The talk will cover the time period from the invention of photography in the early 1800s to the present day. Soules will show a wide variety of photographs depicting the people, villages, industry and beauty of MDI during the past 170 years. The pictures tell a story about the evolution of photography technology, the history of MDI and the photographers who took pictures here.

George Soules is a software architect, photographer and volunteer archivist for the Southwest Harbor Library’s collection of photographs. His interest in technology, photography and history led him on a search to locate the oldest photos taken of MDI subjects and to learn about the photographers who visited or lived on the island from the mid 19th century.

Soules lives in Southwest Harbor with his wife, Janice.
