Food revolution heats up

BAR HARBOR — Chef Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Day will be celebrated here with cooking classes for grade school students, a special gathering and dinner at Havana restaurant and announcement of the final push to build a greenhouse at the Conners Emerson School.

Havana chef Alex Klein and Mount Desert Island Hospital dietitian Amory Davis will join nearly 100 fifth- and sixth-grade students in the school cafeteria for Food Revolution Day on Friday, May 16, for hands-on cooking workshops and food education sessions. Students will work on some new ways to prepare fresh, seasonal vegetables, and all of the food used will be sourced locally, from Mr. Klein’s family farm in Sullivan.

The ingredients that the students help prepare will be incorporated into Havana’s Friday evening menu, and a portion of the night’s proceeds will go to support the school’s greenhouse project, which has been quietly in the making for several years.

Students and parents will join a reception at Havana from 4 to 5 p.m. that day. Samples of the final dishes that the students helped to create will be served during the gathering.
