Ernest McMullen’s artistry at Somes Sound Gallery

MOUNT DESERT — The works of Mount Desert Island painter Ernest McMullen are on display at the Gallery at Somes Sound through Oct. 31.

For the past 20 years, McMullen’s paintings have been exclusively of the coast, surrounding waters and interior of Mount Desert Island.

From his first visit to the island, he regarded it as a place of benediction, a giant instrument that resonates with a spirit that is both evanescent and eternal. McMullen strives to evoke this mysterious blend of form and light with a technique that is firmly based in the realist tradition.

According to gallery owner Tyra Hanson, the artist’s work reflects his great fondness for Jan van Eyck, Titian, Velazquez and Tiepolo, with more direct influences from Frederic Church, Fitz H. Lane, Thomas Eakins and Richard Estes.

“His artistic sensibilities have also been deeply influenced by those nineteenth and twentieth century classical composers and writers who celebrated the American landscape,” she said.

The gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 12-5 p.m.

McMullen’s paintings will also be shown at the gallery next summer.
