Maine Literary Award winner Peter Korn will speak about his book “Why We Make Things and Why It Matters” at the Jesup on Sept. 6.

BAR HARBOR — Peter Korn will discuss and sign copies of his book “Why We Make Things and Why It Matters: The Education of a Craftsman” at the Jesup on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. The book won the 2014 Maine Literary Award.

A recent review by the Art Libraries Society of North America describes this book as “of particular interest to readers involved with the crafts and others interested in a memoir about satisfying work, creativity, and the pursuit of quality.”

In addition to this most recent work, Korn is the author of several how-to books, including the best-selling “Woodworking Basics: Mastering the Essentials of Craftsmanship” and “The Woodworker’s Guide to Hand Tools.”

Korn is also the founder and Executive Director of the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, a non-profit woodworking and design school in Rockport. A furniture maker since 1974, his work has been exhibited nationally in galleries and museums.

This event is cosponsored by Sherman’s book store. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the Jesup with a percentage of sales donated to the library.
