BAR HARBOR — The Connors Emerson School invites the public to volunteer to read to students as part of its Business of Reading Festival during the week of Nov. 17.
The weeklong celebration of reading aims to build meaningful relationships between the school and people in the working community. Volunteers are asked to spend half an hour with students, sharing both how reading is important to their work lives and as a source of pleasure in their personal lives.
This reading experience leaves a lasting impression on the minds of the children, the teachers and the community workers who participate. It demonstrates to students that reading is essential in all walks of life. The time commitment is minimal: 8:30-9 a.m. any morning from Nov. 17-21 for grades K-6.
Readers may bring a copy of their favorite books used at work or at home, or they are welcome to choose books from the Conners Emerson or Jesup Libraries ahead of time. We encourage all readers to arrive at school 5-10 minutes early to sign in and be escorted to the classroom.
If you are interested in helping, please register online at ces.barhbr.com. or contact Siobhan Ryan at 288-4467 ext. 1040 or at [email protected] Volunteers will be contacted in the beginning of November to confirm the date, time and teacher whose classroom they will visit.
