Checkov meets “I Love Lucy”

BAR HARBOR — Christopher Durang’s play “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” performing at Acadia Repertory Theatre through Aug. 12, is as much absurdist sitcom as it is a modern update of a Chekhov play.

The play, which won the 2013 Best Play Tony Award, concerns three middle-aged siblings in their family home in Bucks County, Pa., whose professor parents whimsically gave them names from the plays of Anton Chekhov. The cast of the Rep production includes Robert Smith, Sarah Zinsser, Cheryl Willis and Mike Perlman.

“Vanya and Sonia have spent their lives in the house, taking care of their parents until they passed away, and have never left, while their sister Masha has had a successful career as a famous actress,” Acadia Rep leaders said. “When she comes home with boy-toy Spike in tow, family drama comes to the fore in hilarious fashion! The play is full of Chekhov references for those who are into such things, but it’s not at all necessary to know anything about Chekhov to enjoy the show.”

“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” plays Tuesday through Sunday until Aug. 12. The play contains occasional profanity and a young man appears in his underwear.
