Charlie Johnson wins arts award

BAR HARBOR — Charlie Johnson, visual and media arts teacher at Mount Desert Island High School, has been honored for “exemplary service to education” by the Maine Art Education Association (MAEA).

He was presented the 2015 Carol Trimble Award, named for a former executive director of the Maine Alliance for Arts Education, at the MAEA’s fall conference earlier this month.

Johnson was lauded for striving to provide opportunities for all students and for working collaboratively with other teachers, administrators, community members and parents.

MDI High School art teacher Dan Stillman was quoted as describing Johnson as “an exemplary educator who exceeds the standard for arts advocacy in our school and across the state.”

“I would place Charlie in the top 1 percent of his class, give him an A++ for effort and offer him extra credit for being fun to work with.”
