BAR HARBOR — Artists and longtime area arts supporters Ivan and Sherry Rasmussen are the 2014 Acadia Arts Achievement Award winners. The Bar Harbor couple were surrounded by fellow artists, friends and fans for the award presentation at the annual Father’s Day concert in Agamont Park on Sunday.

The Rasmussens have been fixtures of the local arts scene since Mr. Rasmussen opened Cone 10 Gallery in 1974. The gallery soon morphed into the town’s first artists co-op, Island Artisans, which remains open on Main Street to this day. For 37 years, the couple owned and ran Alone Moose Gallery on West Street. The shop featured the work of Mr. Rasmussen and other local artists and craftsmen.

Rasmussen was instrumental in creating the chamber’s Arts Achievement Award 15 or so years ago and has for decades been a supporter and promoter of the Bar Harbor arts scene. She is currently active on the committee that organizes the monthly First Friday Art Walks downtown.

“The really great thing about this art community is that it is really, really supportive,” Rasmussen said. “When somebody sells a big piece, everybody is happy, because we all know how difficult it is to make a living as an artist here.”

The pair has created an arts colony on West Street. They have surrounded their new Art on West gallery with artists’ accommodations, show spaces and organic gardens.
