BAR HARBOR — Genevieve Barbee of The AP Collection will be here the week of May 20, interviewing and illustrating local women about their talents for her ongoing series “That’s What You’re Good at,” a collection of illustrations crafted while listening to short audio interviews with the subjects.
Each conversation with the artist is woven into a portrait shedding light on the subject and how they lead in their community. Her visit is in partnership with the YWCA of Mount Desert Island and Anchorspace.
The Pittsburgh-based illustrator has been “collecting talents” for over a year. Recording a quick audio chat with her subject, she listens back to the conversation while creating the paintings, bringing a different perspective to their myriad talents.
From parallel parking and modern dance to trend spotting, everyone has something that they are the expert on. It can be funny, meaningful or life-affirming—the conversation offers a window into people’s lives and a portrait that illustrates more than just a pretty face.
A public opening reception will take place at Anchorspace, 337 Main St, on Thursday, May 26, from 6-9 p.m. with original artwork and prints available for purchase.
