‘Art of Acadia’ exhibit to open

MOUNT DESERT — “Art of Acadia,” an exhibit curated by art writer Carl Little, will be on view at the Northeast Harbor Library for the month of October. An opening reception with book-signing and brief remarks is set for Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 5-7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Part of the proceeds of the sale of the book will benefit the library.

Inspired by the recently published “Art of Acadia” by David and Carl Little, the exhibition presents 14 artists featured in the book, including Gail Cleveland, Richard Estes, Sarah Faragher, Hal Ford, Phil Frey, Liddy Hubbell, Jennifer Judd-McGee, David Little, Diana Roper McDowell, Amy Pollien, Robert Pollien, Carol Shutt and Wini Smart.

The show is dedicated to Joellyn Duesberry, who passed away on Aug. 5. “Joly painted in the Mount Desert Island region for more than 50 years,” said Little. “She found special inspiration at Hall Quarry, on the ‘quiet side’ of the island, and out on Great Cranberry Island.”

Little has curated shows for the Farnsworth Art Museum, the Penobscot Marine Museum and the Ellsworth Library. He has written monographs on a number of artists, including Joel Babb, William Irvine, Jeffery Becton and Wendy Turner. He helped produce film portraits of Dahlov Ipcar, Jon Imber and Ashley Bryan in the Maine Masters series and is featured in the video “Richard Estes: My Camera Is My Sketchbook.”

A native New Yorker, Little moved to Mount Desert Island in 1989. He directed the public affairs office and the Blum Gallery at College of the Atlantic before joining the Maine Community Foundation in 2001.

Founded in 1892, the Northeast Harbor Library serves everyone from the towns of Mount Desert and the Cranberry Isles and their surrounding communities, who seek information, enlightenment and the pleasure that comes from the life of the mind. Call 276- 3333 or visit
