After-school music program planned

MOUNT DESERT — Seaside United Church of Christ presents a free after-school music appreciation program beginning April 2.

The Music and More program is designed for students in third grade through sixth grade and held Tuesdays from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. at Seaside UCC’s Union Church Parish Hall in Northeast Harbor. The program runs through June 4.

“Music increases higher order thinking skills, builds self-esteem and encourages self-discipline and commitment,” an announcement from the church said. The program “is just one part of Seaside UCC’s new programming aimed at increasing access to music in the community.”

Music and More offers a safe, fun, and informal setting for kids to increase their exposure to, and gain a better understanding of, a wide range of music concepts and styles. Activities will vary each week and will include workshops and performances by guest musicians from around Mount Desert Island.

Participants will explore different musical styles, learn about instruments, build instruments from scratch and more.

The Music & More program does not include music lessons on specific instruments, but students who already play may practice instruments with guidance from program leaders. Staff can also assist in arranging private lessons.

Mount Desert Elementary students age eight and older attending Lego Club can be picked up by program staff at the Northeast Harbor Library and walked across the street to the Parish Hall; other students may be dropped off directly at the Parish Hall.

Light healthy snacks will be provided. Contact Hope at [email protected]. Visit www.seasideuccmdi.org.
