AUGUSA — The Mount Desert Island High School volleyball team defeated Cony 3-1 Tuesday, bringing the team to 8-4 on the season and a solid fourth seed in Class B.
Set scores were 8-25, 25-14, 25-17 and 25-23.
Senior Mackenzie Hanna had three aces, eight kills, one block and eight assists in the match. Julia Watras added seven aces and 13 assists. Dori LeMoine had two aces, five kills and one block.
Deering 3 – MDI 1
MDI gave the undefeated Deering Rams a scare in the first set-and-a-half of their match Saturday. But Deering, an undefeated Class A powerhouse, won the day 3-1.
It was the third match in four days for MDI. For a Breast Cancer Awareness celebration, the team sported tie-dyed pink socks and decorated the gym with posters.
Strong teamwork and defense were in evidence in the high-level match. MDI took the first set 18-25. They overcame an early deficit in the second set to get a slight edge, leading 12-13, then 14-16 and 18-19. The Rams were making errors, leaving holes in the middle of the court or space at the net for the Trojans to get in sneaky tips.
The high skill level on both teams was evident in impressive saves that kept points going long after they would have ended in any other matchup.
But the Trojans’ momentum flagged, and Deering took the second set 25-21. The Rams put up an unanswered 12 points to start the third set before their own error left an opening for MDI to get back in the set a bit. That set went to Deering 25-10.
The Trojans found some moments in the fourth set, too, including back-to-back aces from Hanna. That last set was a closer score, a 25-17 win for the Rams.
Hanna had five aces, four kills and six assists in the match. Watras had three aces, three kills and eight assists. Alexis Clarito had two aces and five kills.
Yarmouth 3 – MDI 0
The Trojans lost to Yarmouth Friday night at home 15-25, 13-25 and 20-25. Watras led with two aces and five kills. Maddy Candage added three aces and two kills.
