Trojans top Coyotes, Ellsworth rematch set



BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity boys’ basketball team defeated Old Town 70-47 at home on Tuesday to improve to 14-3 on the season.

Derek Collin led the Trojans in scoring with 18 points, and Drew Shea added 14. James McConomy scored 10 for the Trojans, Dane Vanzura and Brett Duley scored nine each, and Colby Lee, Alden Fournier, Nick Duley and Erik Merchant combined to score the remaining 10.

Hermon 45 – MDI 33

The Trojans fell to the undefeated Hermon Hawks Jan. 31 at home.

Hermon built up an early lead and ended the first half ahead 28-15. In a third-quarter rally, MDI cut their deficit to end the quarter down only four points, 30-26. But foul trouble for MDI in the fourth helped the Hawks remain undefeated.

Drew Shea led the scoring with 13 points, including 3 three-pointers, and Derek Collin had six points.

MDI 63 – Orono 48

Just 24 hours after the Hermon loss, MDI added a decisive victory Feb. 1 in a doubleheader against Orono, beating the Red Riots 63-48. The Trojans raced out to a 21-12 lead after the opening quarter and maintained their advantage the rest of the way.

Collin provided 27 points for the Trojans, and James McConomy made four 3-pointers and finished with 15 points overall. Dane Vanzura added eight points for MDI, and Shea, Eli Parady and Colby Lee combined for the remaining 12.

MDI 62 – Foxcroft 32

The Trojans allowed their fewest points of the season in a 62-32 win over Foxcroft Academy Saturday. The Ponies scored just 19 points over the final three quarters. The road contest also was part of a doubleheader with the girls’ team.

Collin scored 14 points to lead MDI (13-3) in scoring once again, and McConomy provided 13. Shea scored eight points for the No. 2 Trojans, Brett Duley added seven, and Lee, Vanzura, Eli Parady, Alden Fournier and Erik Merchant split the remaining 20.

The boys’ team is set to face Ellsworth (11-6) at the Senior Night game on Thursday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m.
