Trojan baseball topples Raiders

EAST MACHIAS — The Mount Desert Island High School baseball team finished its four-game road stand with a 9-0 victory over Washington Academy on Tuesday to improve to 6-2 on the season.

Matt Perconti and Andrew Kennedy combined to hold Washington Academy (1-5) to just one hit on the evening. Kennedy also had two singles for MDI at the plate, and the Trojans reached the season’s halfway point having won four of the past five games.

MDI will try to complete a season sweep of Foxcroft on Thursday, May 10 at 4:30 p.m. The Trojans are slated to face John Bapst on Saturday, May 12, at noon and battle Belfast on the road on Tuesday, May 15, at 4 p.m.

Old Town 6 MDI 2

In Old Town on Friday, MDI produced eight hits but was unable to pull out the victory against Class B North’s two-time defending champions. The Trojans fell in their second defeat of the season with a 6-2 loss.

Alden Fournier led MDI with three hits at the plate, and Stanley Grierson had two. Sam Keblinsky, Nick Stanley and James McConomy provided the rest of the hits for the Trojans, and freshman Andrew Kennedy took the loss on the mound with two earned runs allowed in five innings of work.

“We were in position to score a lot [against Old Town], but they pitched well and really came away with some great plays defensively,” Pooler said. “That was one of those games where you’ve just got to tip your cap to them and move on.”

MDI 5 Foxcroft 4

Move on, MDI did, and the Trojans got back in the win column a day later with a comeback victory over Foxcroft. The Ponies led the Trojans by three runs entering the sixth inning before the visitors scored four runs over the final two to earn the comeback win.

“We put a lot of runners on base all day, and it was just a matter of getting something to fall for us,” Pooler said. “That eventually happened, and we turned around to earn ourselves a gritty win against a good baseball team.”

Stanley, McConomy and Jacob Mitchell recorded two hits apiece for MDI, which had 11 as a team in the victory. Fournier threw a complete game for the Trojans with seven strikeouts and five hits allowed.
