BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School indoor track team saved one of its best performances of the regular season for last. The boys’ and girls’ squads both earned third-place finishes at Saturday’s seventh Eastern Maine Indoor Track League meet at the University of Maine. The Trojans head next to this weekend’s Penobscot Valley Conference championships with a new sense of confidence.
Senior Griffin Maristany starred for MDI on the boys’ side with individual wins in 200- and 400-meter dashes. Maristany’s 400 time of 53.04 seconds narrowly edged out teammate Thorin Smith, who finished second.
In the 800-meter run, sophomore Stephen Grierson finished second with a time of 2 minutes, 8.93 seconds. Grierson also joined Maristany, Matt Perconti and Jose Chumbe on a four-person team that placed second in the 4-by-200 meter relay with a time of 1:38.53, just 0.12 seconds behind first-place Brewer.
The MDI boys also enjoyed success in the field, where Croix Albee (second place), Sam Hoff (third), Micah Hallett (fifth), Chance Closson (sixth), Adam Burdzel (ninth) and Archer Hill (10th) gave the Trojans six of the top-10 finishers. The Trojans’ 81 points beat out Mattanawcook Academy, Orono, Central, Bucksport, Searsport and George Stevens Academy.
On the girls’ side, Ashley Anderson continued her season-long dominance with wins in the 55- and 200-meter dashes. Anderson’s 200 time of 26.21 seconds was 1.83 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor in a crowded 25-person field.
In the 800-meter run, sophomore Zoe Olson raced out to a first-place finish with a time of 2:27.86. Junior Olivia Watson finished third in the 1-mile run with her time of 6:06.90.
MDI’s Alicia Norberg and Dori LeMoine finished third and second, respectively, to give the Trojans a strong showing in the shot put. Norberg’s distance of 31 feet, 5 inches was a half-inch shy of tying for first place.
The Trojans will return to Orono this weekend to compete in the PVC championships. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10.
