Tennis splits with Ponies



BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity girls’ tennis team defeated visiting Foxcroft Academy Tuesday 3-2. The MDI boys fell 3-2 to the Ponies.

The teams contended with breezy conditions, which are not uncommon on these courts, but also announcements and starting buzzers from a concurrent middle school track meet.

Ellie Bridgers defeated Emily Curtis 8-0, but the other two girls’ singles matches went in the Foxcroft column. Emily Banks fell to Avery Nelson 8-5 in a grueling set and Maggie Collins lost to Olivia Wesley 8-2. In doubles, Rachelle Swanson and Kate Hoff won their set 8-2, and Isabella Michael and Austria Morehouse won 8-4.

The MDI boys won at first and second singles but lost the other three sets, bringing their season record to 1-5.

Drake Janes defeated Kazu Kawashima 8-3, and Gabe Michael won his set with Austin Bickmore 8-4. At third singles, Luiz Estacio fell 8-0 to Foxcroft’s Jerry Zhou. Michael Borge and Lanvin Estacio lost 8-2, and Nick Harding and Kevin Waldron fell 8-3.

September Murray won an exhibition set against Sawyer McCarthy, 6-2.

On Monday, the girls’ team recorded a 3-2 victory over Washington Academy.

Bridgers and Collins posted singles wins for MDI with scores of 8-1 and 8-0, respectively. Hoff and Swanson beat Washington Academy’s Maggie Hood and Kate Somes 8-4 in doubles action, and Claire Shaw and Maggie Strong came close to adding a fourth win for MDI with a 9-8 (10-8) loss in the tiebreaker.

On the boys’ side, MDI defeated John Bapst 3-1 last Thursday for its first win of the year. Janes, Max Craigo and Gabe Michael had singles wins for the Trojans, and Nolan Murphy and Borge added a doubles win.

MDI (1-5) came close against Washington Academy but fell in a 3-2 defeat. Janes won his singles match with an 8-6 win over Greg Moulton, and Harding and Waldron won their doubles contest for the Trojans.

The team will host Old Town on Monday, May 14, at 4 p.m. and George Stevens Academy on Wednesday, May 16, at 4 p.m.
